Fish Tanks
SIES Fish Tanks

Sullivan’s Island Elementary School is so lucky to have not one but FIVE incredible fish tanks in our school! They house a variety of fish species, representing local fish as well as fish found in oceans around the world. They add a calming and revitalizing ambiance to our school and help us make learning about science extra interesting. The benefits of our Think Tanks are great, and we are only just beginning to dive into the many ways our students can learn from our tanks.

Music Class
Special Area Classes

Skimmers Making Music and Memories! Our special area classes—music, P.E., Spanish, art, and computer lab—give students opportunities to explore their creativity, develop new skills, and build confidence as learners. Special Areas are a favorite part of the day, inspiring curiosity and excitement in every Skimmer.

Book Vending Machine
Book Vending Machine

We’re trading snacks for stories and popcorn for pages thanks to the generosity of our SIES PTA! Our brand-new Book Vending Machine gives students the chance to earn a special token and “purchase” a brand-new book to take home. It’s a fun and exciting way to celebrate reading and keep our students turning the pages!

Coastal Bingo Night
Coastal BINGO Night Excitement

B-21, O-17, I-9… BINGO! 🎉

Bingo always brings the F-U-N, and Coastal Night at SIES was no exception! Families kicked off the evening with a delicious pizza dinner (courtesy of Steel City Pizza), then got their game faces on for some exciting BINGO rounds packed with awesome prizes! But the fun didn’t stop there—everyone dove into hands-on Coastal Science adventures, exploring watersheds, discovering fascinating fossils, learning about marine mammals, meeting the IOP turtle team, and uncovering even more coastal wonders. 🌊🐢🌿 What a night to remember!

Community Partnerships are very important at SIES! Thank you to the Sullivan's Island Police Department for ensuring our annual Sandcastle Day was a huge success!

🍓 Look What We Grew! 🥕

Our Green Heart Gardening Program is in full bloom, and we’re loving every moment—especially the tasting! 🍅😋 From planting tiny seeds to harvesting fresh, delicious veggies, our young gardeners have worked hard, and now they get to enjoy the fruits (and veggies!) of their labor! 🌽🥬 Nothing beats the joy of growing, learning, and eating straight from the garden! 💚

Seeds to Shoreline

🌊 Getting Muddy for a Mission! 🦀

A little pluff mud? No problem when you're on a marsh-saving mission! 💪 Our SIES third graders are rolling up their sleeves and diving into the year-long Seeds to Shoreline program, where they cultivate and transplant Spartina alterniflora (smooth cordgrass) to help restore and protect South Carolina’s coastal ecosystems. 🏝️✨ Through this hands-on experience, students become environmental stewards, learning firsthand how vital marshes are for wildlife, erosion control, and water quality. Who knew getting a little muddy could make such a big impact? 🌍

Navigation mapping on the Yorktown
USS Yorktown Mapping

⚓️ All Aboard the USS Yorktown! 🎖️

Our fifth graders set sail on an unforgettable adventure aboard the USS Yorktown, the tenth aircraft carrier to serve in the United States Navy! 🚢 As they explored the massive ship, they stepped into the shoes of naval heroes, learning about navigation, military strategy, and the pivotal role aircraft carriers played in history.

The excitement didn’t stop there! Students put their skills to the test with hands-on activities, including a "Battleship"-style coordinate graphing challenge to track enemy ships. What an incredible way to bring math, history, and adventure to life! 🚢

Nothing beats learning by the sea!

Seining in the Atlantic – What’s in Our Net?

Our young marine explorers hit the shore for an exciting hands-on adventureseining in the Atlantic Ocean! With each sweep of the net, the big question was: What will we catch?  Flounders, shads, crabs—oh my! Every catch was a chance to discover, learn, and explore the incredible marine life that calls our coastline home. What an unforgettable way to dive into science!

The Lowell Family, Current SIES Family

I love SIES! My teachers are nice, and I get to see my friends. I really like going to the beach for recess and learning about the ocean in Coastal Science class. The experiments are exciting! My teachers help me learn and have fun at the same time. Soar On, Skimmers!
